I dont get the exact meaning :-/
It motivates a person in second place not to stay there, push forward and reach the first.should i take it this way Raghs?

Okay. Let me explain.
"They may forget what you said..."
-> This states the "words uttered may definitely vanish at one point of time"..
"but they will never forget how you made them feel"
-> "even without any need of words you can make a person feel your importance/need/companionship etc.. which can't be forgotten during the entire voyage"
