On this date in 1972, a new constitution was adopted making the island nation of Ceylon the republic of Sri Lanka. A British crown colony for more than 100 years, the country gained its independence in 1948. Sri Lanka is an island country in the Indian Ocean, and exports tea, rubber, coconut, a variety of spices, and textiles. Ethnic tensions between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil separatists have never been fully resolved.
